A Brief History of Thai Massage
Thai massage, also known as Nuad Thai or Nuad Boran, is an ancient healing practice that dates back more than 2,500 years. It is deeply rooted in Thai culture and influenced by Indian, Chinese, and Southeast Asian traditions of medicine and spirituality.
The origins of Thai massage are often attributed to Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, a physician and close companion of the Buddha. He is honoured in Thailand as the “Father of Medicine,” and his teachings continue to inspire the practice today.
Unlike many Western massage techniques, Thai massage was developed as part of traditional Thai medicine. It is based on the belief that energy flows through pathways in the body known as sen lines. By applying gentle pressure, stretching, and rhythmic movements, Thai massage aims to clear blockages in these energy channels, restoring balance and promoting overall wellbeing.
Historically, Thai massage was practised in temples by monks as a form of spiritual healing. The famous Wat Pho temple in Bangkok still serves as a centre of learning and preservation for this ancient art.
Today, Thai massage has spread worldwide, recognised for its ability to reduce stress, ease muscle tension, improve circulation, and enhance flexibility. It remains both a therapeutic treatment and a deeply relaxing experience, blending bodywork, mindfulness, and tradition.
